Description
Richard Gaudreau has been practicing law since 1969. His practice covers maritime transport, ship operation and international trade.
He also has a wealth of experience drafting contracts and agreements and arguing cases before courts in Quebec and the rest of Canada, including the Supreme Court of Canada.
Richard has been involved in numerous arbitrations, both as a lawyer and an arbitrator. He has chaired a number of public inquiries and studied and drafted maritime and port legislation and regulations in Canada and abroad.

Richard has been invited on several occasions to speak in Canada and abroad on matters related to marine and port legislation.
Representative mandate
Collision between two vessels
Represented a major Canadian shipowner and its insurers in an action against the owner of the other vessel involved in the collision. The case had a significant general-average component.
General average and bankruptcy
Represented the shipper of a 28,000 ton wheat cargo from Canada to Africa, after the ship ran aground in the port of loading, its owner went bankrupt, and the vessel was no longer sufficiently seaworthy to continue its journey to Africa. The case involved court proceedings in Canada, arbitration in France, and a general-average claim arbitrated in England.
Ship purchase and financing
Counsel on several occasions to shipowners and bankers regarding contracts to finance, build and sell vessels.
Chair of the Canada Marine Act Review Panel
The Canada Marine Act deals primarily with the management of Canada’s national ports. Richard chaired the Act’s review panel that submitted many recommendations to the Canadian government, which is currently applying the recommendations through amendments to the Act.
