The Supreme Court of Canada rules on the federal government’s proposed national securities commission |

On December 22, 2011, the Supreme Court of Canada (the “Court”) rendered a decision declaring the federal government’s Proposed Canadian Securities Act (the “Act”) a “comprehensive foray by Parliament into the realm of securities regulation”1. The effect of the Act would have been to create a single national securities commission in Canada.

Iredale v. Mont-Tremblant; When noise becomes unreasonable |
|
Several thorny cases have made the news recently involving noise pollution and the nuisance it can cause in the neighbouring vicinity. Notable among them were the problems cause by the noise from snowmobiles on the P’tit Train du Nord linear park in the Laurentians, and from outdoor concerts and car races at Park Jean Drapeau on Ile Ste-Hélène, which exasperated the residents of a neighbouring municipality across the St. Lawrence River.

News on the 2011 property assessment roll |
|
Once again, spring brings with it new property assessment rolls, and the possibility of contesting any assessed value or other entry that may be erroneous. The time period for doing so expires April 30, 2011. If a contestation is not filed before that date, the taxpayer will have to wait until the next roll is deposited, in 3 years.
