Langlois Kronström Desjardins maintains its commitment to Opération Enfant Soleil by pledging $27,000 during telethon!

Québec City, June 6, 2011 – Law firm Langlois Kronström Desjardins is extremely pleased to have participated in the 24th Opération Enfant Soleil telethon as a Proud Partner, pledging $27,000 to provide assistance to sick children across the Province of Québec.

“The amount we pledged this weekend is the result of our firm commitment to this cause and the generosity of all the firm’s members, whose dedication is truly remarkable”, explained Jean-François Gagnon, the firm’s managing partner. “This is the third year we’ve been associated with this campaign, and our continued support attests once again to the human-scale values of our firm.”

Over the last year, and particularly the last two months, Langlois Kronström Desjardins has held various fund-raising activities in its offices. It is the only large law firm to have made Opération Enfant Soleil its principal charitable cause.

In addition to this financial contribution, Langlois Kronström Desjardins has for the past two years provided the organization with up to 250 hours per year of free legal services. This pro bono program is the only one of its kind in the Québec legal-services industry, and is the reason Langlois Kronström Desjardins is now a Proud Partner of Opération Enfant Soleil.

Opération Enfant Soleil is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1988 whose mission is to support the development of high-quality pediatrics and social development projects for all Quebec children.

Langlois Kronström Desjardins wins an important appellate case

On February 29, 2012, the Québec Court of Appeal rendered a long-awaited judgment in the continuing legal battle between Canadian Royalties and Nearctic Nickel Mines concerning their respective ownership interests in a mining property in the area of the Plan Nord in Northern Quebec called the Expo Ungava Property (the “Property”). Situated just south of Xstrata’s Raglan Mine, the Property has been found to contain significant mineralization and is currently being developed by Canadian Royalties, which has invested in excess of $500 million in developing its Nunavik Nickel Project.

François Bouchard and Éric Latulippe, partners at Langlois Kronström Desjardins, will be giving a presentation at the 12th annual AGRIcarrières symposium organized by the Sectoral workforce committee for agricultural production. The theme of this year's symposium, which will deal primarily with human resources management in the agricultural sector, is "How to keep good employees". François and Éric's presentation is entitled "Labour laws: sow good practices and avoid harvesting problems". The symposium will take place this coming March 15 at the Clarion Hotel in Québec City.

Québec Court of Appeal Upholds the Autonomy and Effectiveness of Commercial Arbitration in Quebec

Langlois Kronström Desjardins has won an important appellate case dealing with the autonomy and limits of commercial arbitration in the Province of Quebec. In a highly anticipated decision, the Québec Court of Appeal confirmed that commercial arbitrators have the power and jurisdiction to interpret and enforce commercial agreements through orders of specific performance. In so doing, the Court of Appeal upheld the autonomy and effectiveness of commercial arbitration in Quebec.
